Salary and Career Outlook

By 2020, there will be about 21 percent more jobs available in the trucking field than there is today. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that this is one of the faster growing career fields around the country.

Currently, there are over 29,000 people who work as professional drivers in the state, which is a higher proportion of many other state in the nation according to overall population.  Average annula wage is around $37,500 per year.  Data from BLS.gov.  Many employers are out there and some are looking for different things from their drivers. As such, you will need to research your options before you start making applications to ensure you find the career that will provide you with the best hours and best pay for what you do.

Important Laws and Regulations in Alabama

There are various laws that need to be followed in Alabama. Spike tires or safety chains may be required for safety when there are slippery conditions on the roads. This includes for snow as well as rain, which means there are no specific months when these will be required.

It’s also important to note that in Alabama, the federal CDL law does not pre-empt the guest passenger statute, which means that a CDL holder is liable for the death of a guest passenger in the cab of the truck.

You will also need to maintain DOT records, which follows federal guidelines. You cannot work more than 60 hours in a 7-day period or 70 hours in an 8-day period. Your week can reset at any time as long as you have had 34 consecutive hours off-duty.

There are many great trucking jobs in Alabama. Some have you driving in the state and others have you driving out of the state. Regardless of the job you choose to apply for, determine what the benefits are and if it’s the right industry for you.
