Arizona is the most highly populated landlocked state in the contiguous 48 states and is known as one of the Four Corner states.

Salary and Career Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that earnings for a trucker is about $42,260 for the year. This number can fluctuate based upon experience and employer, however it is still higher than the national average for truckers. If you have different endorsements on your license or experience driving, it can lead to a higher salary.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also estimates that the trucking industry is seeing a lot of growth. By 2020, there may be as many as 21 percent more trucking jobs in Arizona and throughout the country. This can be good for you as it shows stability within your career field.

Arizona features many industries involved in the trucking industry including government, general trucking, agriculture, food manufacturing and more. Within each industry, there are various salaries, benefits and other things to consider, which means you want to research your options before getting involved with one employer over another.

Important Laws and Regulations in Arizona

There are many important laws and regulations that you need to be aware of. Due to snow, ice and other conditions that could cause your truck to skid, you are permitted to install snow chains on your tires. Around mountain passes, you may have to stop and install the chains due to immediate conditions that require it. During the period of October 1 to May 1, pneumatic tires with metal studs can also be used.

There are also idling laws that you need to be aware of. In Maricopa County, you can idle for 5 minutes. However, this number increases to 60 to 90 minutes when the temperatures exceed 75 degrees.

DOT regulations must also be followed in Arizona, as per federal standard. You cannot drive more than 11 hours consecutively nor can you drive more than 70 hours in an 8-day consecutive period. DOT records must be submitted on a monthly basis.

The many truck driving jobs in Arizona can run the full gamut in terms of qualifications and benefits, so it’s a good idea to check out as many as possible before accepting a position. There are over 22,000 professional drivers currently working in AZ.  Average annual earnings for drivers is slightly over $42,000 per year, depending on the freight hauled and routes.  Data from BLS.gov.
