Arkansas Trucking Jobs

You will be able to find many trucking jobs in Arkansas. This is one of the few careers where you don’t need a four-year degree or a lot of on-the-job training in order to make decent wages. All you really need is a CDL in order to take advantage of the opportunities.

Salary and Career Outlook

Arkansas currently has around 30,000 residents who are employed as professional drivers.  Average earnings are slightly more than $38,000, but may vary heavily due to type of freight drivers haul.  Data from BLS.gov.

There are more and more opportunities becoming available in Arkansas and around the country. The career outlook is set to increase by 21 percent by 2020. With more opportunities, you can determine where you want to work and with whom – and even help to control how much you earn. This is why it’s so important to look at all of your options before you accept a position.

Some of the industries you can work within include agriculture, government, general trucking, cement mixing and more. Some industries may require certain CDL endorsements, too, such as tanker or HAZMAT.

Benefits of a Trucking Career

Due to the many job opportunities, you can control how much you earn as well as what your schedule is. Do you prefer to drive during the day or night? Do you want weekends off or would you rather work long hours all year in order to get a few months off at the end of the year? Many of these options are available with a trucking career.

Important Laws and Regulations

You will receive points on your license in accordance with Arkansas law if you do not follow the driving laws of the state. If you obtain 10 to 13 points, you will be sent a letter telling you to be careful. Any points of 14 or higher can lead to a suspension of 3 months or longer – and this could have a negative impact on your career, as well.

When you drive in Arkansas, you will need a CDL. In order to obtain this, you must be at least 18 and get a medical certificate. You will also need to pass a driving and written test. If you plan on driving a truck with hazardous materials, air brakes, a double trailer or other equipment, the DOT will require you to get the specific endorsements on your license.
