People may only apply for a commercial driver license (CDL) in Massachusetts if they are at least 18 years of age. They will not be able to apply at all if they have had their driving privileges suspended by the Registrar. Applicants from 18 to 20 years of age may apply for a CDL that will allow them to drive within the state of Massachusetts only.

Applicants 21 years of age and older can apply for a CDL that will allow them to drive interstate. They will be disqualified if the Registrar has ever taken away their driving privileges in the past.

Beginning the Application Process

Beginning the application process means filling out the application. Drivers can obtain one from the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) or from the website. They will turn the completed application in to the RMV when they take the written knowledge test. At that time, they will have to prove that they have a valid Social Security Number.

The written test requires payment of a $30 fee with a $10 charge for each endorsement. Applicants will be tested up until two hours before the RMV office closes, but they will not need to make an appointment before they arrive for the test. The written test covers specifics from the Massachusetts CDL Manual, which should be used to study for the test.

Drivers who are applying for a driver license of any kind for the first time will need to take extra documentation with them when they arrive at the RMV. They will need to have documents that prove their birthdates, signatures and residency in the state of Massachusetts.

After Passing the Written Test

Those who pass the written test will be directed to take the eye test. They will receive their learner’s permits at this time, and these will be valid for two years. This permit will allow them to practice driving the commercial vehicle with another driver who currently has the type of CDL the applicants would like to obtain.

Most applicants will need to take a road skills test after they have had time to practice driving the commercial vehicle. They may only schedule this test by way of the Telephone Center and it must be before their permits’ expire. After they pass the road test and they pay their fees, they will receive their CDLs.
