Hiring trucking companies in Montana need their employees to have commerical driver's licenses (CDLs). The Montana CDL requirements mimic most of the CDL requirements of the nation. Those who wish to transport materials in-state need to be 18 years of age or older. Those who want to drive across state lines or drive hazardous materials need to be 21 years of age or older. Those who go over Montana licensing information will find that applicants must be able to provide a valid driver’s license from the state of Montana, and must provide an up-to-date medical examiner card.

There are other Montana CDL requirements that should be noted. Applicants are going to need to be able to provide a social security card or proof of a social security number. Individuals must show proof of being a citizen of the United States. Applicants that meet these Montana CDL requirements are expected to pass both a written exam and a driving exam. The written exam covers the Montana CDL Manual while the driving test covers your inspection and operation of the vehicle.  You will also be expected to pass a vision test before you are given a commercial driver’s license.

Montana re-licensing information only gives you three months post-expiration to renew. Failure to do so will result in retesting. Individuals are expected to renew their licenses at the following rate:

Age 21-70 – 5 years
Age 71 + 75 – 4 years
Age 18 + 72 – 3 Years
Age 19 +73 – 2 years
Age 20 + 74 – 1 year
