Colorado Owner Operator Jobs

The majestic Rocky Mountains provide some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. For the owner operator in Colorado, they also provide some of the most challenging driving conditions in the nation. The steep grades, curves and frequent severe winter storms are all factors to consider when driving through Colorado.

Because the state is subject to heavy snowfall for many months, all commercial trucks are required by law to carry sufficient chains from September 1 through May 31. The law only applies to I-70 from mile marker 133 through 259, but it is wise to have chains when driving anywhere in Colorado during winter. The fine for not using chains when required is $500, which rises to $1,000 if the highway is blocked as a result of failure to use chains. There is also a surcharge.

Colorado has 9,146 miles of highway, including 3,447 bridges. With so many bridges it is important for drivers to know their vehicle’s weight to length ratio while driving in Colorado.

The Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel about 50 miles west of Denver on I-70 is the longest mountain tunnel in in the United States. The tunnel has sensors on the exterior that will activate alarms if any vehicle taller than 13.92 feet approaches. Traffic lights stop all traffic and the vehicle will be banned from entering. All vehicles hauling hazardous material are also banned from tunnel use, except when the alternate route through Loveland Pass is closed by weather or construction.

Some drivers believe the height sensors are inaccurate, because any snowpack on the roadway lifts the truck above the height restriction. The sensor system also calculates the truck’s weight and displays a safe speed for the truck on the curves and 7% grade near the tunnel.

One segment of the highway system, E-470, is an electronic-only toll road. Although not officially a state or federal highway, it does provide a route to circumvent the notoriously heavy Denver metro traffic. The beltway loops around the east and north parts of the city, connecting I-25 with I-70 and other interstates and highways. Tolls are either billed to a pre-existing account, or the cameras at toll booths record license tags. The owner is then billed by mail. If you own your own rig and you're ready to take charge of your career on the Colorado highways, you don't have to live in a major city like Boulder.
