The Maine DMV administers the tests leading to a commercial driver’s license. To obtain the license you must be eligible for a standard Maine driver’s license. You must show proof of identity and legal status in the state of Maine. You must not have had a DWI within the past 24 months. You must be at least 18 years old, and 21 years old if you want to drive out of state. You must certify that you are in agreement with state motor carrier safety regulations, and supply a completed medical examiner’s certificate. You must pass a vision screening test. You will first obtain a CDL learner’s permit by passing a knowledge test. When you are ready, you will need to take a skills test for the class of vehicle you will be obtaining your CDL in. Building Your Trucking Career

The Maine Motor Transport Association is the organization that speaks for the majority of the trucking industry in the state of Maine. The association supports a state initiative designed to reduce the incidence of distracted driving, such as driving while talking on a cell phone. More and more people in Maine are calling 911 to report distracted driving, so perhaps the culture is slowly changing. Texting while driving is particularly dangerous and needs to be stopped.

Professional Benefits of a Trucking Career

A trucking career can take you far in life! It can provide a stable income from early adulthood on through to retirement and beyond. In Maine, salaries for truck drivers are competitive, averaging $34,500 per year, with the potential to earn much more. While this is lower than in some other states, the cost of living in Maine is also relatively low, and so a solid, middle-class lifestyle is available on a truck driver’s salary. Plus, companies must compete for qualified drivers, so they tend to offer good benefits to drivers they want to hire, benefits like medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, paid vacations, and more.
