You have your choice of trucking jobs in Maryland. Before you opt for one opportunity over another, understand salaries and benefits to each so you can ensure you have satisfaction within your job.

Salary and Career Outlook Bureau of Labor Statistics averages out to be $41,560. This salary is higher than the average in the US for truckers. You may also be able to earn higher based upon the industry that you choose to work in.  There are currently almost 20,000 people employed as truck drivers in the state.

Job security is important and you will find it in trucking. There are more and more companies hiring their own truckers and even companies who are outsourcing to owner-operators. Regardless of the category you fall into, it means there are plenty of jobs. The BLS also states that within the next decade, the number of positions available will increase by 21 percent.

If you are going to become a trucker, you have to think about what industry you want to work in. Each industry has different requirements and different salaries. For example, if you drive in the oil industry, you will need an endorsement on your license for tanker and possibly for air brakes. If you drive in the HAZMAT industry, you will be paid higher and need a HAZMAT endorsement.

Benefits of a Trucking Career

Trucking is one of the few careers where you don’t need a bachelor’s or master’s degree to make a good living. This means you can obtain your CDL, choose your industry and then work on the amount of experience you have in order to impact your earnings.  You have plenty of opportunities in the state, but check to see what employers are offering what before you take a position. If you do your homework, it will lead to a higher level of job satisfaction.

Important Laws and Regulations

Maryland has an anti-idling law in place of five minutes. Should you be found idling anywhere, including a truck stop, for more than five minutes, you may be issued a citation. The fine associated with the citation may fall to you and not your employer.

If you are driving in the winter, it’s a good idea to know about the snow chain laws. Chains are only required in the state when there is a snow emergency and only certain roads are usually covered on the emergencies.

Another thing you have to be aware of in Maryland is the DOT regulations. You cannot stay on the road and drive for as long as you want to. Federal law requires you to drive less than 11 hours in one sitting and no more than 70 hours in an 8 day period.

You need to be aware that Maryland is strict with the law that makes sending text messages illegal while driving. If you're caught doing it, you'll face a $500 fine. Also in Maryland, your trucking company can be held liable if you're in an accident, under the "negligent driving" law.
