New Jersey has a strong agricultural sector. It is a major producer of blueberries, cranberries, other fruits, vegetables and nuts, dairy products, nursery stock, and seafood. It also has a vibrant food processing industry. Other important manufactured products include pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, and chemical development. All segments of the transportation industry are very strong in New Jersey, including shipping and trucking. Thus, all types of trucking jobs are available in the state. Local jobs will take you throughout the state on the large state highway system. Local jobs may have dedicated routes, in which you drive to the same destination each week, interacting with the same customers. With these jobs, you get to go home virtually every day. Regional jobs take you outside the state into the densely populated mid-Atlantic region of the country. These tend to be jobs that take a few days or up to a week to deliver the cargo, but you still get to go home several times a week. The longest-distance jobs are the Over The Road (OTR) jobs. With these, you can be hauling cargo anywhere in the country, including Alaska. You will be on the road for two to four weeks at a time, experiencing the sights and highlights of different areas of the country, and tasting their different cuisines. This can be a great choice for someone with an adventuresome spirit.

Requirements for Driving in New Jersey

To get your CDL in New Jersey you must be over 18 years old and have a valid New Jersey driver’s license. You must have 20/40 vision in each eye, and be able to distinguish red, green and amber colors. You must be physically fit, and complete a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. The cost of a CDL permit in New Jersey is $125 for knowledge, endorsement, and skills tests. You must also pass a 6 point identify verification process. After you pass the knowledge test, you will be issued your permit for practice driving. You need to practice for 10 days, accompanied by a holder of a CDL in the class of vehicle for which you are applying, before you can take your skills test. When you pass the road test, you can take your permit and authorization slip to a local MVC agency to obtain your license. Most people who wish to obtain a CDL prepare for it by taking classes at a professional commercial driving school. Several of these are located throughout the state.

The New Jersey Motor Truck Association is the organization most members of the trucking industry, including the drivers, join to represent their interests. In December of 2013, two truck drivers, In August, 2014, a truck driver was rescued from a burning tractor-trailer rig on the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield Park. Although his seat belt caught fire, the driver was able to get out of the cab and jump into and adjoining creek. State troopers were able to pull the driver out of the water and transport him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

New Jersey truck drivers enjoy very good pay. The average yearly wage is $43,900, and even higher wages are possible depending upon a number of factors. Benefits offered to truck drivers in New Jersey tend to be very good, too, because employers must compete with one another for the best drivers. It is standard to offer medical, dental, and vision benefits, and sometimes flexible health spending plans. Paid vacation increases with the number of years you spend working for a particular company. 401k retirement plans are common, sometimes with the employer making contributions to the plan as well as the employee. Leave for military service and bereavement, and disability and life insurance plans paid for by the employer are other frequently offered perks. Of course, different companies offer different pay and different types of benefits, so it is a good idea to talk with several companies before choosing one.
