Pennsylvania Owner Operator Jobs

TS-image-78459697With its location near the international ports on the East Coast and proximity to heavily populated New York and New Jersey, traffic congestion is inevitable in Pennsylvania. The state is crossed by several major interstates including I-80 and I-90 that run from coast to coast. Other important interstates include I-79 which travels from West Virginia to Canada and I-81 which runs from Tennessee to the border with Canada.

The interstate highways are supplemented by the Pennsylvania Turnpike and numerous other state and federal roadways. There are 121,770 miles of roads in the state with 39,861 miles under the jurisdiction of the state’s Department of Transportation.

A 2008 study found that 34 percent of the urban highways in Pennsylvania were congested, with the worst delays occurring during the daily rush hours. The delays cost motorists $2.3 billion each year in wasted time and fuel.

Traffic will increase as the natural gas industry continues to expand in the state. The gas fields run roughly diagonally from the southwestern to the northeastern corners of Pennsylvania.

Development of the Marcellus shale fields across about half the state provides many employment opportunities for the owner operator in Pennsylvania. According to the federal government every well uses 300 to 1,400 truckloads of equipment to set up and bring online. There should also be plenty of other trucking jobs to haul the supplies like food that will be needed by the increased population in the developing areas.

Road maintenance in Pennsylvania hasn’t kept pace with increased use. As a result 43 percent of roads in the state are rated in poor or mediocre condition and 27 percent of all bridges are considered structurally deficient. The poor condition of bridges has an impact on truckers since many have weight restrictions. Even loads that don’t require special permitting are barred from many Pennsylvania bridges.

Oversize permits are available through the state’s online permit system. The driver must have already set up an account with the government to use the internet option. They can also be obtained from an authorized permit service. Loads over 136,000 pounds require additional documentation and applications. The permit may require escorts, flagging, travel time limits or other restrictions.
