Tennessee Owner Operator Jobs

TS-image-dv372044The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are more than 54,000 truck drivers in the Volunteer State, a large number of which are owner-operators. These drivers are responsible for hauling cargo ranging from agricultural products to automobiles. Owner-operators in Tennessee can expect to earn around $37,680 annually.

Truckers in Tennessee face a variety of road challenges in the way of mountain passes. In some areas, they may need to watch for crosswinds, while other areas are prone to falling rock and mudslides. When driving along Interstate 24 between Chattanooga and Nashville, truckers may need to use the runaway truck ramps if they find their rig is becoming difficult to handle.

Autumn is a peak tourist season in many parts of the state. During the fall, there may be a great deal of traffic, especially near the Great Smoky Mountain State Park. Heavy thunderstorms may appear suddenly in the summer, thereby causing hazardous driving conditions. Moderate snowfall can be expected during the winter, but can be accompanied by ice and freezing rain that make driving especially hazardous.

Tennessee law requires owner-operators to be at least 18 years of age before they can obtain a Commercial Driver's License. Those who are under 21 are restricted to driving within the state. In addition, applicants for a CDL must pass a DOT physical and eye exam. Those who would like to transport hazardous materials must also pass a written exam and a background screening performed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

There are at least 34 companies that hire owner-operators in Tennessee. Many of these companies are based out of cities such as Nashville or Knoxville. Those who obtain contracts with one of the Nashville-based carriers could find themselves in the prestigious position of hauling stage equipment for some of country music's hottest superstars.

Owner-operators in Tennessee have plenty of possibilities when it comes to finding loads to haul. They also drive on some of the most scenic roads in America during the course of their work. This is why so many drivers are proud to call the Volunteer State their home.
