Tennessee Trucking Jobs

State highway and interstate roads in Tenessee cover more than 14,000 miles and easily link all major metropolitan centers of the state. Large cities like Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga and Memphis are all connected by this expansive interstate roadway system.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation provides communication links to update travelers on driving and road conditions. While in Tennessee travelers may dial 511 for real-time updates. In addition, the state also posts condition updates on Twitter. Roadway Twitter updates are avialable by regions such as Chattanooga, Memphis, Knoxville, and Nashville. In addition, the state also maintains Twitter updates according to each of the 15 interstate routes in the state.

Speed limits vary by the type of road, location and driving terrain. Rural roads are typically 70 mph zones while urban areas enforce a 55 mph speed limit. Roads in the mountainous terrain in the eastern part of the state usually carry a 45 mph speed limit. Speed limits around and inside municipal areas vary greatly as each municipal area is allowed to post its own speed requirements. As a result, speed limits may vary and signs are not always posted by the state since counties are commonly responsible for road maintenance.

Environmental speed limits have been enacted in rural freeways in northeastern Tennessee. This area includes Knox, Sullivan, Jefferson jand Anderson counties. These environmental speed limits restrict trucks from exceeding 55 mph.

Salary and Career Outlook

Various trucking jobs are located throughout the state. In Tennessee, this includes various industries such as general trucking, government trucking and food and beverage manufacturing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates earnings for a truck driver in the state to be $37,680. This salary is close to the national average for truck drivers.

There are over 54,000 drivers employed as commercial drivers in the state, which is a relatively high proportion when compared to the overall population.  Average annual earnings are between $37,000  and $38,000 according to BLS.gov.

Important Laws and Regulations in Tennessee

There are various laws and regulations to be aware of in Tennessee. This includes knowing when you can have snow tires on your vehicle to get through any bad weather, which may be seen around the mountains, especially. During the time of October 1 through October 15 each year, you are permitted to have tires with wire for snow and ice or a tire that has wire or other traction material imbedded into the tire.

You will also be required to maintain federal DOT records. This states that you can only work 70 hours in an 8 consecutive day period. It also states that you cannot work more than 11 hours in a row behind the wheel of a truck.
