Trucker Laptop Review

Choosing the right laptop for OTR trucking use is important.  A perfect combination of features, usability, and durability should be the main concerns of truck driver laptops.  Here are the reviews for 3 laptops for use in the cab.

This is a “ready-to-roll” laptop. Ready-to-roll means basically that after purchasing it you can start using it right away. Most of the laptops can’t be turned on and used right away. The battery needs charging, the operating system updated, an antivirus installed. But ready-to-roll computers come with all those things already done. This is an amazing thing when it comes to buying a laptop for trucking.

It weighs around 5.5 lbs., which is very light considering it is a 15.6” laptop. It has an Intel Pentium P6100 Dual Core (2.0 GHz / 3Meg cache / 64-bit) processor with 4GB (DDR-3 / PC3-8500 / 1066 MHz) of RAM memory and a hard drive size of 500 GB drive (SATA-5400 rpm). That battery, a 6 cell lithium ion, can last up to 4 hours. Its LED HD screen makes it perfect for watching movies or videos at a high quality resolution. HDMI (1) and high speed USB (3) outputs, CD/DVD reader/writer and a 5 in 1 multimedia card reader makes importing data into the laptop very easy. With WIFI and LAN Ethernet connection to the internet and an integrated 1.3 megapixels camera, this laptop is very useful to chatting with your loved ones when on the road. Last, it has a required voltage of charging of AC 120/230 - V 50/60 Hz (65 watt power usage).

2. Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036 LED TruBrite

This laptop can also be purchased in the “ready-to-roll” version. It comes with a 14” LED HD screen, a built in webcam with Face Recognition feature and built-in stereo speakers with Dolby Advanced Audio which makes it perfect for watching movies, photos, videos and chatting online with friends and family. It is extremely light, weighing around 4, 8 lbs. and it has a 6-cell battery that lasts up to 3.8 hours. The graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 4250) is a very powerful one and will enrich your experience for sure. The processor, a 1.8 GHz AMD Phenom II P820 triple-core processor, provides amazing detail and clarity to movies, games and music. It includes the Toshiba Eco Utility, a feature that will help save battery and prolong the laptop’s life. The Eco Utility has three options: High-Performance (that will help hang on to the latest watt of power), Power Saver (that helps save energy) and Balanced (a balance between the two of them).

3. Acer Aspire 8940G (AS8940G-6865)

This laptop will make your truck cab looking like a cinema. With its 18 inch LED HD wide screen offers a high quality experience when watching movies, photos and video chatting. Also with the 290-nits brightness feature, you can see the image clearly even in the bright sun light. A laptop with such a huge screen would make you wonder how heavy it could be. It’s actually as light as most 16” laptops are, weighing around 8.5 lbs. Although this laptop has been on the market since 2009 and it is considered “old” by some, many truckers swear by it. The ports and various and include: 5-in-1 memory card reader, 5 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, eSATA, an ExpressCard/54 slot, FireWire 400, headphones, microphone and S/PDIF jacks. The audio is excellent: Dolby-optimized Acer Cine Surround sound system with 5 built-in speakers and Acer’s Tuba Cine Bass booster. The batter has a life of 3 hours and a half, tested under continuous WIFI browsing.
