Before you can apply for trucking jobs in NH, you will need a commerical driver's license (CDL). Those who are working to understand New Hampshire CDL requirements should look to understand all NH licensing information. This information will help you to pick up a trucking job in the state.

Applying for a commercial driver license (CDL) in New Hampshire requires that residents fill out an application and take it and their current driver licenses to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). When they arrive, they will be able to begin the testing process.

Documents Needed During the Testing Process

When applicants arrive to take their skills tests, they will need the following documents:

  • The appointment slip
  • Their green cards if they have them
  • Their current driver licenses
  • Three documents that have the applicants’ names, birthdates and addresses
  • Their social security numbers

Applicants are going to need to take an eye exam to ensure that they have 20/40 vision in both eyes. They will need to take a knowledge test to demonstrate that they know the rules of the road. Some people will need to take a test that will add endorsements to their licenses. For example, some applicants will need to take a test specifically to allow them to transport hazardous materials. They will take these extra tests along with the general knowledge test at the DMV.

The Knowledge Tests

The knowledge tests will be performed on a computer and have multiple choice questions. However, if applicants would prefer to use the audio version of the test, they may request this when they arrive at the DMV. In order to pass the tests, applicants will need to receive a grade of 80 percent. If not, they may take their exam again, but they will need to wait at least 10 days to do so. The written test, covering knowledge from the New Hampshire CDL Manual, and skills test work to understand your basic knowledge of truck driving.

The Driving Skills Test

After applicants successfully complete their knowledge tests, they are going to need to take a driving skills test. However, they will need to be accompanied by a licensed driver who can take the vehicle to the testing site and drive it after the test is over.

This test will examine the applicants’ skills in several areas, including the following:

  • How well the applicant operates the vehicle on the roads and highways
  • How well the applicant understands the rules of the road and street signs
  • Is the applicant able to tolerate the stress of driving a commercial vehicle on the roads?
  • Is the safety of those around the applicant important to him or her?

The test will require about 15 to 20 minutes. If they are unable to pass the test at this time, they will need to wait 10 days before they can take it again. In the event that the applicants will not be able to attend their scheduled exams, they will need to give the office at least 24 hours notice. If they fail to do this, they will not be able to re-schedule their exams for 30 days.

Scheduling a Time to Take the Tests

The vision and the knowledge tests do not require an appointment, but applicants will need to arrive at the nearest DMV before three o’clock p.m. to begin the testing process. They will need to schedule a time for their driving skills tests, and they can do this after they pass their vision and knowledge tests.

Other New Hampshire CDL requirements will request that you provide a recent medical certification to prove good health. You will also need to have a clean driving record to operate the vehicle in the state and receive your CDL license.

New Hampshire re-licensing information includes regular background checks every 5 years. Individuals who allow their license to expire may be subject to retesting.
