Find OTR Jobs in Colorado

Are you ready to take your driving skills on the road with OTR truck driving jobs in Colorado? Whether you want to stick to the western United States or drive across the country, you may find quite a few options with this state’s growing trucking industry. Find out what it takes to become an OTR driver and how you can start applying for CDL jobs.

If you do not yet have a CDL, you must contact the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a Class A or Class B driver’s license. As long as you are 21 or older, this license permits you to transport large loads in and out of Colorado.

From there, it’s time to start building your career and meeting other truck drivers and company owners. A good first step is joining the Colorado Motor Carriers Association, a professional organization for truck drivers all over Colorado. This may help you advocate for yourself and explore your options as you apply for jobs.

Truck driving is a growing and respected industry in Colorado. In late 2013, Colorado driver David Ragland was recognized for his part in saving two children from a burning car while covering his normal route.

Colorado has 9,146 miles of highway, including 3,447 bridges. With so many bridges it is important for drivers to know their vehicle’s weight to length ratio while driving in Colorado.

The Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel about 50 miles west of Denver on I-70 is the longest mountain tunnel in in the United States. The tunnel has sensors on the exterior that will activate alarms if any vehicle taller than 13.92 feet approaches. Traffic lights stop all traffic and the vehicle will be banned from entering. All vehicles hauling hazardous material are also banned from tunnel use, except when the alternate route through Loveland Pass is closed by weather or construction.

Some drivers believe the height sensors are inaccurate, because any snowpack on the roadway lifts the truck above the height restriction. The sensor system also calculates the truck’s weight and displays a safe speed for the truck on the curves and 7% grade near the tunnel.

Job growth in Colorado may be among the most promising in the country. Between 2012 and 2022,  O*Net anticipates a 25% increase in tractor-trailer jobs in CO, an increase that is more than two times the national average. Per O*Net, the average salary for a Colorado tractor-trailer driver is $42,100 per year.
