Iowa Owner Operator Jobs
Iowa is the nation’s largest producer of corn and ethanol, and is also home to the world’s largest truck stop. The Iowa 80 Truckstop is located on Interstate 80, one of the major interstate highways that cross the state. With its many services for both trucks and truckers, the truck stop is a welcome refuge for any owner operator in Iowa who needs a break from the road. An annual trucker’s jamboree is held, and there is even a trucking museum on site.
I-80 is the east-west route across the state, while I-35 and I-29 are the primary north-south routes. Since I-35 stretches basically from the Mexican to the Canadian border, traffic can be expected to increase along this important roadway. I-29 links up with I-35 in Kansas City and also flows northward to Canada. It also may experience heavy use in the future.
I-29 already experiences significant congestion, mainly in the Omaha-Council Bluffs region. The route also hangs up somewhat in the Sioux City area. In fact, a 2007 study found that 29 percent of Iowa’s urban highways were congested. The state is taking some steps to improve traffic flow along I-29.
The Western Iowa Intelligent Transportation System will use technology to track and manage traffic in Sioux City and Council Bluffs. Installation of cameras, sensors and transmitters along with a fiber optic network is ongoing. Some reconstruction, including additional lanes and interchange improvements, are in the works.
Roads throughout the state are in need of help. The 2007 study rated 42 percent of Iowa’s roads in poor to mediocre condition, while 27 percent of the state’s bridges were found to be functionally obsolete or structurally deficient. With tight state and federal budgets and rapidly rising costs for construction materials, it is unlikely the backlog of road projects can be tackled any time soon.
A wide variety of forms needed by the owner operator in Iowa are available online to download and print. The state has a process for carriers to establish a charge account to pay fees for radioactive waste and oversize load permits.
