State and Federal Requirements for Trucking in South Dakota

To get your commercial driver’s license (CDL) in South Dakota, you must be 18 years of age or older, or 21 years of age to drive interstate or transport passengers. The first step is to obtain a permit. To do this you need to show proof of identity, legal standing to be in the United States, and proof of legal residence in South Dakota. You will have to pass vision and knowledge tests, and supply a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

This will enable you to practice driving the type of vehicle for which you are applying to drive: Class A, B, or C. To practice, you must be accompanied by CDL holder for the class of vehicle you are interested in. When you are ready, you will take a skills test consisting of several components including any endorsements you wish to attain. Most people prepare for their CDL by enrolling in a commercial driving course. Such courses are offered in many places throughout the state.
